Popondetta Rugby Union Revitalised

Popondetta in the Oro Province is finally having its share of rugby glitz.

The Rugby Ready and Get into Rugby programs travelled to the rural areas of Popondetta, visiting Awala Primary School in the hope of revitalising rugby union in the Province.

Oro Province Rugby Union sanctioned under the governing PNG Rugby Football Union Body, has taken the first few steps to revitalising and strengthening the course of Rugby union throughout the province.

Elenoa Kunutuba alongside getting the rugby officers, visited the Awala Primary school as part of the drive to enhance the sport, and encourage mass participation, distributed and presented sets of equipment to the schools community.

In her efforts to strengthen women’s rugby in Papua New Guinea, Kunutuba was pleased with the schools individual effort, to introduce an U15 and U16 Women’s Rugby competition.

While Oro Province is not part of the four unions with the sanctioned women’s competition, the demand for properly sanctioned competition, remains a work in progress.
