“COMPENSATION DEADLINE NOT MET” – Ruth Rungula

Relatives of the five who died in a tragic car accident in the Imbongu electorate in Southern Highlands Province last year have extended the compensation date to the end of this month, following a failure by the people of Nipa Kutubu to meet their demands today.
An agreement reached in January of this year was made for the people of Nipa Kutubu to pay a compensation fee of K6 million and 600 pigs to the relatives of the victims by June 25th, which is today.

This date has now lapsed with not one word from Niap Kutubu on the status of the compensation payment. Leaders of the Olgai Welaili tribe have urged them to have the compensation paid at the end of this month.

Naru said the issue is complex and should be dissected and dealt with individually.

His comments come after mounting public pressure from various sectors in the country.

The Morobe Governor was at the Angau Hospital to visit three children and their mothers, who were flown in last week to Lae, following medical emergencies.

Speaking later, he said the political turmoil should be treated carefully.

Naru made it clear, he isn’t in support of any action to force the prime minister’s resignation.

It’s a complex issue, he says, and various aspects should be dissected and carefully understood before judgement is passed.

The governor’s comments come, as public pressure is mounting both in Lae and Port Moresby, and other parts of the country.

Yesterday, Unitech students held an awareness campaign to educate the public on the political situation.

This is expected to lead towards a forum later in the week. Today, the Lae Chamber of Commerce called for caution.
