A directive has been issued by the Police Commissioner for an independent investigation into the EM TV News crew assault last Sunday.
The investigators will be reporting directly to the commissioner.
Whilst investigations continue, there has been a public outburst over the assault.
The assault of an EM TV News crew at 15 Mile last weekend has sparked public outcries on police brutality and social media.
A post on the PNG News page collected over 300 likes and comments.
Comments circled around lack of professionalism, emotional instability, lack of punishment by the hierarchy and even a call for protest against the perpetrators.
One of the Facebook comments by a user named Jack Epei, suggested that the base level of recruitment should be a university degree holder, and an increase in training of up to 2 years, and not 6 months, is needed.
A J‘Jon Awara commented that police brutality was a crime and a violation of human rights.
Many agreed that the National Government should deploy our policemen and women for further studies and training in other countries to put an end to police brutality and discipline.
However, a few who went against the EM TV News crew say that they were at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Apart from these posts, members of the news team have also gone online to show support for their colleagues with encouraging quotes.
In the meantime, Commissioner Tom Kulunga has issued a directive for an independent investigation into the matter.
The EM TV management and news team is cooperating with the investigation.
