Sports Scene – Episode 21, 2014

The government launched last week an K80 million plan for the development of the Bisini Parade sporting complex that will see upgrades in Soccer, Rugby Union, League, Cricket, Softball, Netball, Lawn bowls and a multipurpose oval for AFL and touch footy.

The PNG Amateur Boxing Union hosted the PNG Amateur Boxing Association hosted the International Fight Night boxing tournament at the Lamana Gold club. The PNGABU was hoping to use the tournament as good preparation for PNGs boxers and the roster of Australian fighters featured a lot of quality. The night opened with three bouts featuring local fighters. The most anticipated fight of the night was between Jessie Travers and Henry Umings in the 56kg.

 

In most of the previous bouts, the Australians had tired the PNG boxers out, this time, it was Umings who was dancing his way to victory. Umings won in the end, much to the delight of the watching fans.

 

The PNG Sports Federation and Olympic Committee were the Organizer’s of the 2014 Prime Ministers Golf Challenge which along with the Trukai Fun Run, are the biggest fundraising events geared at raising money for Team PNG taking part in International Events, most notably the Commonwealth Games and Youth Olympics and also for the Pacific Games.

 

And finally, PNGs Will Genia played his 100th game for the queensland reds. We have this, exclusive interview with Will, after the match. Genia said this was a memorable and certainly an emotional night, having the support of his family fly over from Papua New Guinea.
