Capital Rugby Union Kicked-Off 2014 Season

Capital Rugby Union kicked-off their 2014 season at the Monier Rugby Park over the long Easter Weekend.

Although a slow start to the 2014 season, the competition has seemed to be brighter, with the return of Women’s 15s and Palais Coach, Elenoa Kunatuba, officiating her first, in-country match.

Attracting a total of 14 clubs, the competition also sees the return of women’s 15s.

On Saturday, Defence with their big forward pack, put up a strong match against the Trukai Harlequins in the second Women’s match of the day.

Cassandra Sampson and Marie Siari, both scored a try each, with Cathy Puro, successful with the boot to convert and bring the Harlequins over Defence, 14 points to 12.

But it was the Men’s Premier Match on Sunday that drew the small and enthusiastic crowd at the Monier Rugby Park.

PNG Palais Coach, Elenoa Kunatuba officiated her first match between the Southern Chiefs and Semi-finalists, Spartans, on PNG soil since the Palais returned from Hong Kong.

There has been an increase in the number of girls since the roll-out of the Pacific in Union program.

And more women are encouraged to take up teaching, coaching and officiating roles, to further strengthen the development of Rugby Union and other sporting codes throughout the country.
