Nuku Investigations

Investigations into the 2013 burning of houses and destruction of property at the Nuku District Station in West Sepik province will soon begin.

The investigation team, led by Chief Superintendent Donald Yamasombi, will be travelling to Nuku this week to launch this investigation.

The incident occurred last November where over thirty youths, and a group of police personnel from Wewak, led by Chief Inspector Sakawar Kasieng, entered Nuku without proper authorization, and raided the community.

This is the second investigation to be carried by the team. The unauthorized operation was facilitated by a certain individual who complained to Police in Wewak, about a minor traffic infringement involving Tony Wouwou, a Mai villager from the Nuku District.

The raid for Wouwou resulted in the burning down of three houses, destruction of private properties, threatening of people’s lives, and open gunfire.

Wouwou was away in Aitape during the incident when his house was broken into, his generator; vehicle parts and household goods were looted and transported to Wewak.

In another incident last December, Wouwou was forced off an Air Niugini flight in Wewak bound for Port Moresby, and taken to the Wewak police station, where he was detained for 50 hours. He was released after two days without any charges. His family is still living in fear.

The entire allegation will be investigated, and those included will be charged accordingly, and prosecuted. Meanwhile investigations into another illegal raid at the Ex-service compound in Angoram District, are nearing completion.

The team have re-arrested a member of the illegal police ID24 in relations to the rape of 16 year old girl, and threating of two female witnesses.
