The PNG-Fiji Community has come to the aid of the PNG Defence Force with the refurbishment of the Murray Barracks Commands Officer’s mess in Port Moresby.
This strengthens the long term relationship Fiji has with Papua New Guinea.
The PNGDF yesterday said thank you in a small, but significant ceremony.
It was a night of comradeship between the Papua New Guinea Defence Force, and the Fijian Community in PNG.
Formalities included the planting of trees, symbolizing their growing relationship.
The unveiling of a plaque by the Fijian High Commissioner, Romanu Tikotikoca, and there was also a traditional exchange.
These gestures are in appreciation of the support shown by the PNG-Fiji Business Council in retiling the Commands Officers’ mess.
The retiling is part of a refurbishment program by the Papua New Guinea Defence Force.
The sound system, an ice making machine, the big screen and the retiling have been completed under the refurbishment program.
The perimeter fencing around Murray Barracks will be the last project.
Colonel Carl Wrakonei was pleased with the timely support received, while noting the importance of public-private partnership, rather than waiting for the government’s funding for the projects.
The Commands Officers mess is the pride of the PNG Defence Force.
It hosted the state dinner of his Majesty, Prince Charles, in 1979.
