Women Celebrate International Women’s Day

Women in PNG have made positive gains in social, political, and economic achievements in their struggle for gender equality.

Yesterday, a dinner was hosted by Minister for Youth, Religion and Community Development, Loujaya Kouza, to commemorate International Women’s Day, and acknowledge PNG women.

 

During the dinner, highlights of what PNG women have accomplished, were acknowledged. Distinguished women leaders in the social, economic and political arena, attended this dinner to commemorate International Women’s Day.

 

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day was Inspiring Change through Transformative Leadership, and Economic Empowerment.

 

The wife of Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, Linda Babao, who gave the keynote speech, said there is still division among women groups, but there is hope we can mend it, and work together.

 

She also stressed that Gender Based issues, is a collective problem, and needs both genders to address this.

 

Minister Kouza encouraged women leaders, to tell their success stories to the media, so it can be published to encourage other women. Minister Kouza also highlighted the need for a separate Secretariat for Gender Based Violence.

 

A tribute was offered to the late Schollar Kakas. In recognition of her outstanding leadership, Minister Kouza launched the Schollar Kakas Outstanding Leadership Award.

 

This leadership award will be given to an outstanding women leader next year, upon nomination.
