Tourists Visit Lababia

Kamiali village on Lababia Morobe Province was visited by tourists on-board an Australian cruise ship, Oceanic Discoverer yesterday.

Morobe Governor Kelly Naru was present to welcome the tourists and also vowed to develop the tourism industry in the province.

Lababia is one of three tourism destinations in Morobe Province that are listed in the ship’s annual schedule.

Kamiali is a village with a population of just over 1000 people, and home to arguably, one of the PNG’s best wildlife sanctuaries. It is one of the coastal villages in Morobe, that has the potential to be developed into a tourism destination in the country.

Yesterday, it hosted 72 tourists from Australia, who were on their way on a three weeks tour of Papua New Guinea.

Governor Kelly Naru also arrived, and joined the villagers in welcoming the tourists into Lababia and Morobe Province.

Governor Naru was later invited on board the ship, where he presented gifts to the captain and met with the tourists.

Many coastal villages in the province have more to offer in tourism; however funding, education and awareness from provincial authorities have been the major setbacks like in the Lababia village.

Governor Naru says the Morobe Provincial Government has set up the Sports, culture and Tourism office to oversee and fund the development of tourism activities in the province.

“Lababia will be one of our tourist destinations in the province, and there are many others that we will make it our commitment to develop,” says Governor Naru.

Meanwhile, the Morobe Provincial Government has also committed towards improving the community guesthouse, as well as providing funding for trekking activities in the area.
