PIU To Carry Out Union Festival

The Pacific in Union Program will be carrying out the Union School festival, in PiU visited schools in Rabaul, East New Britain Province.

PiU In-Country Manager, Frank Genia, was overwhelmed with the turnout of the students, and teachers during his recent visit to Rabaul.

He says among the interests shown were girls who made up half of the populace.

Rugby Union is a global sport that considers both genders to part take in.

The Pacific in Union program is similar to other sports development programs, and mainly adheres IRB requirements.

The program has successfully rolled out in Port Moresby, Lae and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

The home of the SP PNG Hunters, Kokopo, has now chipped in more than a thousand kids into the program. The 8 schools visited were now into the fourth week of the six week program, and the numbers of student participants, have dramatically increased.

Teachers teaching physical education class are now coaching and refereeing in the program.

Frank Genia will be visiting the province in the following week to host the Union festival for each school that he had visited earlier.

The program has been endorsed by the Rabaul Provincial Education Board, and will see children ranging from Under 9 to 19, taking part in the festival.

Four schools were visited in Goroka, and have seen keen interest coming from the girls.

The result of the program was the recent Women’s Provincial National 7s Championships, which saw the Port Moresby International, Port Moresby Grammar and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville battled in the curtain raisers.

It was a success story for the program, as it continues to carry out the campaign to other Centre’s of the country.
