Pacific Games Technical Delegation Meeting

The Pacific Games Council urged the National Federations to make their mark in their sporting codes at the 2015 Pacific Games.

Pacific Games Council President Vidhya Lakhan made this remark recently during a 2-day Technical Delegation meeting with the 28 participating sports in the 2015 Pacific Games.

The 2-day All Sport Meeting with the 28 sporting codes participating in the 2015 Pacific Games is important as it paves and prepares the National Federations for the games.

Technical Delegates from 22 of the 28 sports travelled from across the Pacific Region including the Pacific Games Council Executive Board Members.

As the countdown continues to the games, the representatives and senior executives of each of the National Federations, designated Sports Competition Managers for each sport, and a technical delegate, came together to plan for the delivery of the games

Pacific Games Council President, Vidhya Larkan, highlighted the importance of the Pacific Games.

It was back in 1959, when the first meeting was held by the then South Pacific Commission in Rabaul, East New Britain Province.

The main issue discussed was how to bring the Pacific Island Nations together to exchange cultures and build a bond of friendship.

From there on, in 1963 the first South Pacific Games, as it was then known, was held in Suva, Fiji.

In 2003, the name changed from South Pacific Games to Pacific Games.

The Council looked at avenues to improve the games and take it to the next level.

It is also making sure the games are professionally delivered, and meets the set international criteria.

National Sporting Federations have key roles to uplift and build the medal tally of their sports.

The meeting ended with the delegations touring the games village and venues to see the progress of the work.
