Morrison On Refugee Fatality

Operations on the Manus Regional Processing Centre have resumed.

However, the evidence of how an Iranian man died, during an uprising last month, is yet to be established.

This is the first death under the Australia and Papua New Guinea processing and resettlement agreement.

Australian Immigration and Border Protection Minister, Scott Morrison, in a radio interview with Ray Hadley on 2GB in Canberra, highlighted the investigative proceedings of the casualty.

EMTV understands that Mr Barati suffered a severe head trauma, which resulted in his death.

However, Mr Morrison, who recently paid a visit to PNG, said he will depend entirely on the facts from PNG police investigations and the coronial inquiry, to verify what exactly happened to the deceased and the violence that erupted on February 17th.

He added that plans were underway to repatriate the body of Reza Barati to his family in Iran.

Furthermore, both the Australian and Papua New Guinean governments have mutually agreed on joint monthly ministerial forums, concerning the processing and resettlement arrangements of asylum seekers, and to ensure the progression of diverting refugee boats away from Australia.

Mr Morrison, said that Australia hasn’t experienced a successful entry of refugee boats in over two months, and attributed this to his Border Protection Personnel and maritime officials.

He also gave statistics of voluntary and involuntary returns, saying it amounted to 500 repatriated refugees while stressing that this was a key part of their operations, since taking up the office of Immigration and Border Protection.
