Mt Hagen City is calm after a fire and rioting by looters brought the city centre to a standstill yesterday.
Business is slowly returning to normal as the community counts its losses after eight buildings were destroyed in Wednesday night’s inferno.
Roads and streets within the city are filled with people once again, after the two-day lockdown to avoid the looters.
Yesterday, tensions ran high after two people were shot; one was killed and another man, along with five students were injured. The student is in critical condition.
Members of the public have levelled the blame at police. Western Highlands Acting Provincial Police Commander, Jacob Kamiak, said today that an investigation will reveal where the shots came from.
“They were throwing sticks and stones at us; we fired shots in the air to disperse the crowd,” said Kamiak.
“I cannot comment on the blame [of] police. We won’t know who shot the man until investigation.”
