The Pacific MMI Lewas are ready to take sweet revenge against host, Japan, who are the favorites, after claiming the last two trophies, but skipper Pauke Siaka, isn’t buying into the favoritism tag.
Their first match against Samoa resumed today, but Japan will be the targets come this Saturday. The teams arrived in Japan, ready for another blazing ICC EAP sanctioned season.
The 2014 Pepsi ICC EAP Women’s Trophy forms the beginning of the pathway to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2016, to be held in India. Japan, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Vanuatu and the Cook Islands, will be vying for the single qualification spot available at next year’s qualifier.
PMMI Lewas have fallen twice at the final hurdle in this event, losing both the 2010 and 2012 finals to Japan. However, with strong side including all- rounder’s, Tanya Ruma and Kila Leka- Amini, are the duo to look out for.
Having won the previous two EAP women’s trophies, Japan enters the event full of confidence that they can claim a third straight title on News soil. And you can’t look further than Pendel Ipi and Varoi Morea in the opening bat and wicket keeping.
Samoa has some genuine talent in their team, who are not shy on the big stage. They will be hoping that this experience can see them improve on their third place in 2012. Vanuatu and Cook islands are looking forward to testing how far they have come in the last two years.
Cricket Without Borders will also take part in the event as an invitational team. It is an organization that aims to promote and develop the game of cricket for young women in the spirit of sportsmanship, cultural diversity and fun.
The round- robin matches began today. The top team qualifies for the final. The second and third teams will then play-off on Saturday for the right to join the top side in the final on Sunday.
