Fiji Thanks PNG For K50 Million Funding

The Fiji elections will commence on the 17thof September this year, with support from the PNG Government, through a K50 million funding allocation for the polls.

Papua New Guinea will also take part in Fiji’s elections, through the Melanesian Spearhead Group Observer Group. The nominated person for this role is PNG’s Electoral Commissioner, Andrew Trawen.

PNG’s K50 million commitment was made in April 2013, during the Fijian Prime Minister’s visit to the country. Exactly half of that amount has been remitted to the Fijian Government, while the other K25 million is expected next month.

A grateful Fijian High Commissioner, Romanu Tikotikoca, said the funds would go a long way in assisting Fiji’s elections. If approved, this would ultimately mean that the Independent PNG Observer Team, would solely comprise of PNG officials, as opposed to the MSG Observer Team, that will be formed from other MSG members such as, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia.
