Dr. Gelu Clarifies T.H.E. Party Issue

Registrar of Political Parties, Dr. Alphonse Gelu, has clarified the position of the registry on the resignation of the four T.H.E. Party members yesterday.

He says, as it stands, the four members are still part of the Triumph Heritage Empowerment Party.

Also, the organic law on the integrity of political parties does not give authority for the registry to intervene in the affairs of T.H.E. party.

Dr. Gelu, in a news conference this afternoon, says the resignation of the four MP’s yesterday is an internal matter that must be resolved under the constitution of the party.

He said that reports that the registry of political parties was involved in their resignation were not true.

The current organic law on the integrity of political parties does not give authority for the registry to intervene in the affairs of any political parties.

Dr. Gelu says his letter to the party leader on May 8th was only to advise him on the options available to keep T.H.E. Party intact.

He said the registry still recognize the four MP’s as members of the Triumph Heritage Empowerment Party, until such a time when they are accepted by another political party.

The main aim of the registry is to strengthen political parties and not to allow them to disintegrate.

He said this is not the first time this has happened and the registry is keeping a close watch to ensure all provisions are complied with by MP’s who decide to change political allegiance.

Dr. Gelu hinted that the registry is working to minimize such instances under the revised organic law on the integrity of political parties.
