The Independent Consumer & Competition Commission (ICCC) will be issuing a ban on all non-English labelled food on store shelves throughout the country.
Acting Chief Executive Officer, Elastus Geroro, said the ICCC is putting food suppliers on notice that non-English labelled foodstuff should be removed from shop shelves by the first of June this year.
This means that if a trader supplies food items that do not have English labelling, and do not comply with the other requirements of the interim ban, they will be at risk of breaking the law set by the ICCC.
The Commission under the Food Sanitation Act of 2007, provides that all food items sold in PNG have to be labelled in English. Despite this, shops are still selling non-English labelled food stuff.
This law is designed to enhance the welfare of the people of PNG by encouraging competition, fair trading, and efficiency in business, as well as preventing anti-competitive behaviour, and protecting consumers.
Penalties for shop owners for breaking the law will see fines up to one hundred thousand kina, or two years imprisonment.
