Lae: Kamkumung Landowners Issues Threats to Destroy Water Main

By Bethanie Harriman – EM TV, Lae

A landowner at Lae’s Kamkumung Village has threatened to destroy a Water PNG main pipe running along the Speed Way.

Samson Timson expressed frustration over outstanding compensation payments for his land where the pipe runs underground.

Today, Water PNG cut Timson’s water supply sparking the threat to destroy the main pipe.

A frustrated Samson Timpson explains that the problem goes back three years ago, when according to Timpson, Water PNG promised that they (landowners) would be given free water supply, but this promise has not been honoured.

It is understood that he has outstanding bills, but he said that he is angered by the actions of Water PNG.

According to Timson, personnel from Water PNG used a small excavator to elevate a man over the fence where he then removed the water metre.  They then dug out the water connection to the landowner’s home and severed it.

Kamkumung villagers have given support for him to destroy the main pipe.

Some have taken it personally; they say for far too long they have been ignored, while their land has been used for the growth of Lae city.

If the landowners go ahead with their threats, it would cause severe impacts for Lae City, especially with the PNG Games being five days away, and the visitors expected to converge in the city for the event.
