Morobe fishermen want to participate in Fisheries industry

Fishermen on the coast of the Morobe Province need more support to get their catch into the Market.

This revelation made, as Lae moves towards being the tuna capital of the South Pacific, with multi-million kina tuna processing plants on shore.

Whilst, the Provincial coffers will increase, local fishermen also want to participate.

Guta Sowara, a local fisherman from the Morobe Patrol Post lives on this banana boat with his family and catches fish, competing with bigger vessels owned by fisheries companies. He says the fish numbers are decreasing.

Weti Zozingao, the Provincial Fisheries Manager explains that steps have been taken to ensure more local participation.

He says the intent is to make Morobe the tuna capital of the South Pacific and the world.

Lae hosts most of the country’s biggest canneries, including the new $US 38 million Majestic Seafood factory that will provide five thousand new jobs.
