An essay competition recently held in PNG has highlighted the importance of people, in particular women and girls, watching out for their personal safety when using the internet and social media.
Students from years 7 and 8 at Port Moresby International School (POMIS) and The Ela Murray International School (TEMIS) were asked to write a short essay or poem on the theme ‘I am a woman, what does the internet mean for me?’.
The competition was part of the Cyber Safety Pacifica (CSP) program that focusses on educating young people and the community on the responsible usage of social media and the internet in general.
This competition follows the launch of CSP by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in Papua New Guinea in July 2013 and demonstrates AFP International’s ongoing commitment to the young people and communities of the Pacific. A further CSP program is planned for PNG in early 2015.
There were three winners from each school, who took home great prizes including an iPad, a Kindle and a book set.
POMIS, Head of Department, English and Languages Ronan Moore said it was a great initiative, a great topic and a good learning tool.
