GULF SECURES 80% OF PAPUA LNG BENEFITS AFTER BREAK THROUGH TALKS

Gulf Province has secured the biggest share of benefits from the multi-billion-kina Papua LNG Project following a breakthrough agreement with neighboring Central Province.
Acting Governor of Gulf Province, Morris Taudevin, confirmed the successful conclusion of Tier 1 negotiations, which locked in an 80:20 benefit-sharing split in favor of Gulf Province.
Taudevin applauded the historic agreement as a major milestone for the Papua LNG Development Forum, praising Central Province Governor Rufina Peter, Petroleum Minister Jimmy Maladina, and the Marape-Rosso Government for their constructive engagement.
“Benefit-sharing negotiations are complex, especially between two provinces with legitimate interests,” Taudevin said. “But this outcome shows difficult issues can be resolved through dialogue and mutual respect.”
The Acting Governor noted that the agreement mirrors the ancient relationship between the two regions, which have been linked for centuries by traditional Hiri trade networks.
However, Taudevin warned that the deal must deliver tangible results rather than just “figures on paper.” He emphasized that the provincial government’s primary focus is ensuring the wealth translates directly into infrastructure, local jobs, and business spin-offs.
“Today, we acknowledge what has been achieved,” Taudevin stated. “Tomorrow, our collective responsibility is to ensure that this agreement delivers for our people.”
The conclusion of Tier 1 talks marks the end of provincial-level disputes, but project officials note that critical work remains ahead. The next phases of the Development Forum will pivot toward formal landowner identification, securing the rights of impacted communities, and mapping out a transparent framework to distribute the funds.
Taudevin urged all negotiating teams and state agencies to maintain their collaborative momentum as the project moves closer to a final investment decision.
