7 CHARGED FOR WILFUL MURDER IN DR WAIYE CASE

Seven suspects accused over the death of 26-year-old Doctor Robert Waiye have been charged with wilful murder, with the Kundiawa District Court adjourning the case to November 4.

The suspects appeared before Senior Provincial Magistrate Edward Kupo today, October 7, after their previous court appearance scheduled for Monday did not proceed.

Magistrate Kupo confirmed the charges under Section 300 of the Criminal Code Act and explained the circumstances under which a person may be deemed to have participated in an offence under Section 7.

The court was also told that the Kundiawa District Court does not have jurisdiction to hear bail applications for wilful murder charges.

Any bail application must be made through a lawyer in the National Court.

Magistrate Kupo warned that cases of this nature can take six to 12 months, or even longer, to conclude and urged the accused to cooperate with police investigators.

The seven suspects have been remanded at Barawagi Correctional Institution and will remain in custody until their next court appearance on November 4

Dr Waiye, from Sinasina-Yongomugl in Simbu Province, died on September 16 after he was allegedly assaulted at Gateway Fuelers at Prenorka in Kundiawa.

The matter remains before the court.
