Environment, Conservation and Climate Change Minister John Kaupa has pledged K10,000 to rehabilitate and develop Mt Gahavisuka Provincial Park in Eastern Highlands Province.
Minister Kaupa announced the funding during a visit to the park in Goroka, where he was briefed on infrastructure challenges and the need for stronger community involvement.
He described Mt Gahavisuka as an important environmental and biodiversity asset and called for collaboration to restore and promote the park. He also pledged to work with the Goroka District Development Authority to improve road access.
Mt Gahavisuka is one of PNG’s oldest protected areas. Designated in 1989, it covers about 77 hectares and is listed as a provincial park under communal ownership, highlighting the role of local communities in its stewardship.
Minister Kaupa urged communities around the park to take ownership and actively protect its natural resources, and said he would work with development and donor partners to strengthen conservation of protected areas nationwide.
A submission was presented to the Minister by Mt Gahavisuka Community Chairman Raymond Gahuno on behalf of landowners.
