Bougainville’s law and justice agencies will be able to work more efficiently following the handover of new communications and video conferencing equipment supported by Australia.
Installed at the Bougainville Law and Justice Centre in Buka through the PNGAus Partnership, the new equipment will increase virtual connectivity, allowing agencies to spend less time travelling and more time delivering justice services.
Deputy Secretary for the Department of Justice and Legal Services in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Julianne Sapaka, welcomed the investment, which is part of Australia’s longstanding support for the law and justice sector in Bougainville.
“The people of Bougainville deserve a law and justice sector that is responsive, connected and able to meet their needs. Strengthening how we work together will help us build public confidence in our institutions and deliver better outcomes for our communities,” she said.
The technology will also make meetings more accessible by enabling remote participation, including for people with disability and those unable to travel.
Australia is proud to partner with the Autonomous Bougainville Government and Papua New Guinea to strengthen institutions delivering justice. Strong justice institutions depend on strong coordination, and by helping agencies connect more easily across Bougainville and Papua New Guinea, Australia is supporting practical improvements that help law and justice services reach communities more effectively.
The handover forms part of Australia’s ongoing support for the law and justice sector through the Australia–Papua New Guinea Law and Justice Partnership, a PNG law and justice sector-led initiative.
Activities are identified through the National Coordinating Mechanism and delivered in partnership with sector agencies.
