A devastating fire has completely engulfed the Rabaul District Office building around 4pm today.
The event took the residents in shock on a public holiday meant to be a day of solemn remembrance for Papua New Guinea’s founding father, the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare.
The cause of the blaze, which tore through the administrative hub, is yet to be known.
The Rabaul district office is a critical government center, housing key administrative departments that serve the local populace. The extent of the damage to vital records, equipment, and infrastructure will be assessed.
Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation into the cause of the fire once it has been extinguished.
