UNICEF RECORD LOW IMMUNISATION RATE, HIGHLIGHTS MISEALES OUTBREAK RISK IN JIWAKA

The United Nations Children’s Fund officers working in Jiwaka province have pointed out lowest coverage immunisation coverage for Miseales in the area.

The United Nations Children’s Fund PNG’s (UNICEF) chief field officer Christopher Ngwerume expressed this and stated that they are committed to support and work closely with Jiwaka Provincial Health Authority (JPHA) and other stakeholders to address the issue. He said this during the JPHA’s annual performance review workshop in Jiwaka.

“Jiwaka has lowest coverage of immunisation rate, especially Miseales,” Ngwerume said.

“We are pretty much concern, it’s really putting the province at risk for the outbreak of Miseales, so we are supporting with the outreach, particularly with outreach campaigns for immunisation. We are also supporting health facilities in mentoring the health care workers.”

“We are also supporting nutrition, particularly looking at children under five years. Eighty-five percent of cognitive development of a child happens under five years so we really want to make sure that children get good nutrition. We also support maternity unitality and child conceptive,” he said.

He further added that clean water for domestic use is also a concern in many rural areas and their focus is on the health space of the rural communities..

He said health is a great responsibility that requires collective approach and partnership to address issues and challenges for a healthy society.
