The Office of the Public Prosecutor (OPP) last week received a second round of new office equipment to strengthen its capacity to deliver justice for the people of Papua New Guinea.
The new furniture and equipment were officially handed over by Australian High Commission Minister Counsellor, Elizabeth Le Bas at the OPP offices in Port Moresby.
The investment in modern furniture and equipment will enable the OPP to maintain a professional and productive working environment that supports staff in delivering justice on behalf of the State. The office received furniture and whiteboards, including chairs, sofas, bookcases, cabinets, and dividers. August deliveries included Epson projectors and Ricoh colour copiers.
Speaking at the handover, Acting Public Prosecutor, Helen Roalakona said, “this support comes at a crucial time as we continue to strengthen the services, we provide to the people of Papua New Guinea. Having the right tools and workplace environment will make a real uplifting positive difference for our prosecutors and staff, allowing us to better serve communities and uphold the rule of law.”
The Australian High Commission acknowledged the OPP’s leadership in driving reform and emphasised Australia’s ongoing support, “When we invest in a modern, comfortable, and well-equipped workplace, we’re investing in the people who make justice possible,” said Minister Counsellor Le Bas.
“Well-equipped, professional institutions are critical to delivering justice that builds public confidence and accountability.”
The OPP has played a vital role in PNG’s legal system since Independence, prosecuting cases in the name of the State.
The Australia-Papua New Guinea Law & Justice Partnership will continue to work with justice agencies, including the OPP, to strengthen accountability and the rule of law, ensuring fair and effective justice for all Papua New Guineans.
