THREE DEAD IN HIGHLANDS HIGHWAY CRASH

A fatal road accident along the Waghi Bridge section of the Highlands Highway yesterday afternoon claimed three lives, while several others remain in critical condition at Kudjip Nazarene Hospital.
The collision, which occurred at around 1:30pm near the Waghi Bridge EBC Station, involved a Dyna six-tonne truck and a coaster bus. Eyewitnesses reported that the impact was so severe it alerted people inside the nearby church and surrounding homes, who rushed to assist the victims.
Three people were confirmed dead at the scene, while many others, including children, were rushed to Kudjip Nazarene Hospital, where they are still fighting for their lives.
According to witnesses, the Dyna truck, carrying both adults and children, was heading to Minz River at Tamil Waghi when the driver allegedly failed to indicate before turning. The coaster bus, traveling at high speed, attempted to overtake and collided head-on with the truck.
Jiwaka Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector Laimo Aisi, described the accident as “very unfortunate” and urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads.
He warned drivers and PMV (public motor vehicle) owners not to drink and drive, stressing that police have already stepped-up operations ahead of the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.
“Anyone caught drunk while operating public transport will face the full force of the law,” PPC Aisi said.
He also called on authorities to consider a temporary liquor ban during the Independence period to ensure a trouble-free celebration.
Police investigations into the incident are continuing.
