GOROKA DDA BOOSTS 69TH GOROKA SHOW CELEBRATIONS WITH K150, 000

By Vicky Baunke in Goroka EHP

THE Goroka district development authority has presented a total K150, 000 towards the hosting of the 69th Goroka Show earlier this week at the Goroka district office.

The presentation was done by Goroka District Development Authority CEO Benson Imara to the Goroka Show Chairlady Karyn Hargreaves in the presence of the Goroka Member Aiye Tambua.

Tambua said it is only fitting that the Goroka DDA comes on board to assist where it can as the Goroka Show carries the district’s name and brings revenue into the district.

He said the funding is sourced from the district services improvement program funds and added that there will be games hosted at schools throughout the district a week before the show. This is to bring the people together.

Moreover, Hargreaves acknowledged the support from the Goroka DDA, saying that the Goroka Show is 19years older than the country.

She said the world comes to see PNG through the Goroka Show and brings PNG to Goroka.

She added that Goroka makes about K10m in revenue, a monetary value generated in spin-off benefits from the show alone.

She also appealed to people in Goroka to take ownership of the Show as the committee prepares to go into the Goroka Show celebrations.

The Goroka Show coincides with the independence weekend celebrations annually; however, this year’s Goroka Show will be hosted on the 19th- 21st of September at National Sports Institute.

Hargreaves also confirmed that a total of 74 local singsing groups have already been registered compared to previous years where less than 30 singsing groups from Eastern Highlands took part. She said a total of 150 singsing groups will take part in this year’s Show and will also include Sky divers from Australia.
