WABAG CATHOLIC DIOCESE WELCOMES NEW BISHOP

Thousands of parishioners from across Wabag Diocese in Enga Province gathered today for a Basket Exchange ceremony, marking preparations for the installation of their new bishop.
The celebration signalled the community’s readiness to welcome His Lordship, Most Reverend Bishop Justin Ain Soongie, as the third Bishop of Wabag Diocese.
The event was filled with emotion as faithful Catholics from all corners of the diocese exchanged traditional baskets, many with tears of joy. Parishioners expressed hope and excitement for new spiritual leadership after months of waiting.
The ceremony follows a period of mourning for the diocese, which lost its longtime shepherd, the Late Reverend Bishop Arnold Orowae, who passed away on December 28, 2024. His death left a deep void in the hearts of parishioners.
“We are so happy to have a new father to guide us,” said one parishioner. “Our hearts are full of joy, but we also remember Bishop Arnold with love.”
The basket exchange, a traditional symbol of welcome and respect in the Catholic Church, represented the unity, love, and support of the parishes for their incoming bishop. The colorful ceremony drew people from villages far and near.
The main installation will take place tomorrow at the Cathedral in Sangurap, where Bishop Soongie will be formally installed. Hundreds more are expected to attend as the diocese begins a new chapter under his leadership.
