NIPG HOSTS NEW IRELAND DAY CELEBRATION

The New Ireland Provincial Government celebrated the New Ireland Day, on Saturday, 2nd August  at the Kavieng Sports Stadium, under the vibrant and unifying theme: “The New Island Way.”

This year’s celebration began with a heartfelt Tribute Walk at 6:15am, honouring the legacy of the Former Governor Late Rt. Sir Julius Chan.

The walk, led by Governor Walter Schnaubelt brought together students, families, community leaders, and guests that walked side by side in a powerful act of remembrance and unity.

“Sir J loved to walk among his people. To walk in his honour, side by side with the children and families of New Ireland, is the greatest tribute we can offer,” said Governor Schnaubelt.

“This is how we honour his legacy and take our next steps together the New Island Way.” Schnaubelt said.

Free New Ireland Day t-shirts were distributed to all walkers. At the end of the walk, the Governor Schnaubelt served a barbeque breakfast for everyone at the stadium grounds.

Throughout the day, the program featured traditional welcomes, LLG showcases, fun competitions, and cultural performances from across the province all leading into the high-energy Solwara Vibrations Concert in the afternoon.

The headline act for this year’s concert was none other than Jokema, one of Papua New Guinea’s most iconic musical voices.

They were joined on stage by fellow stars Tonton, Jayrex Suisui, and Sai Kay, which got the crowd electrified with an unforgettable musical experience.

This year also marked a significant shift in how SMEs were involved. Instead of charging stall fees, the New Ireland Events Committee has invited local SMEs to showcase their products free of charge — and paid them to participate and provide delightful samples to the public.

“We’re doing things differently this year putting our people first,” said Governor Schnaubelt.

“This is a celebration that supports our culture, our businesses and our

communities. That’s what we mean by ‘The New Island Way’.”

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to Kumul Petroleum Holdings Ltd, Adyton Resources, Kumul Minerals Holdings, New Ireland Development Corporation, Bisi, Namatanai District Development Authority, Kavieng District Development Authority, and Namatanai Advancement Ltd along with the Chinese Community in Kavieng.

“Their support exemplifies The New Island Way working together, investing in our people, and celebrating our province with pride,” the governor concluded.
