PNG LAUNCHES PROJECT MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE AND TECHNICAL WORKING GROUP FOR CLIMATE FIRST PROJECT

Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG), in collaboration with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), has officially launched the Technical Working Group (TWG) under the Climate Finance Initiative for Resilience and Sustainable Transition (Climate FIRST) project.

TWG will serve as the technical advisory body, providing strategic recommendations to the Project Management Committee (PMC) to ensure effective implementation and alignment with national climate and development goals.

TWG members include key national agencies such as the Department of National Planning and Monitoring, Department of Treasury, Department of Works and Highways, National Energy Authority, PNG Forest Authority, and the Business Council of PNG, among others.

Climate Change Development Authority Acting Managing Director, Debra Sungi reaffirmed PNG’s commitment to climate action.

“We are building the foundations for a climate-resilient future, powered by strong partnerships, inclusive governance, and decisive national leadership. With the support of the Australian government and GGGI, we are turning policy into progress and ensuring no one is left behind in our response to climate change,” said Sungi.

The Climate FIRST project, funded by the Australian Government and implemented by GGGI in partnership with the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA), aims to mobilize US$400 million in climate finance to support PNG’s transition to a low-carbon economy and enhance community resilience. This initiative aligns with PNG’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and National Adaptation Plan (NAP).
