The issue with power supply is an ongoing problem in the country for well over two decades.
East Sepik Governor Allan Bird raised this issue in parliament, stating that blackouts have become a normal part of people’s lives in the country.
Governor Bird urged the government to rectify this issue.
In a series of questions, Governor Bird asked Minister for State Owned Enterprises William Duma, to explain to the people of the country on what is affecting the performance of PNG Power Limited (PPL) and its capacity to supply electricity.
In response, Duma said, there are a number of issues that are affecting the performance of PPL, the biggest issue being the incompetency in staff and management.
Apart from poor management and staff performance, other causes for the poor service by PPL includes aging infrastructure and the lack of attention from the previous governments to address these issues.
Duma said, since underlying issues have been identified, the government will now work to improve the performance and capacity of this state owned entity.
He said, in the coming months the government will work on to address these issues and hopes to see improvements when the year ends.
