High fees for improper loading

Trucking companies in the country will be charged high fees for improper loading.

State agencies within the transport sector have signed an agreement to stop improper loading which has caused severe damage to road conditions and bridges.

Transport Minister William Samb says the current fees will be reviewed and will be increased.

“We want to impose fees to stop improper loading because our roads and bridges have been deteriorating in the past 5 years,” said Samb.

“Agencies in the Transport sector will now enable better policies so the trucking sector is aware what load to carry,” Minister Samb added.

Transport Secretary Roy Mumu says with more changes to the growing industry in the trucking sector, most bridges and roads could not stand overloading or improper loading.

Secretary Mumu says the first step is awareness and also the option to increase penalty fees. He says this is now a priority for the Transport Sector.

Agencies like the Road Traffic Authority will be tasked to put more effort in this process. While the current law is outdated, more consultation will be done during the first  six months.

“RTA will work together with other agencies to improve policies and also make our roads safe for the public,” said Mr Terema.
