In parliament today, Rai-coast MP, Peter Sapia, called for the closure of the Ramu Nico Mine. His comments follow a recent spillage from the mine’s slurry tanks at Basamuk, in Madang.
He has labeled the incident as an environmental disaster that needs prompt response from the relevant authorities. He said he has already engaged an independent team who are on the ground to carry out investigations and assessments on the situation.
In response, Environment Conservation and Climate Change Minister, Jeffery Kama, gave an assurance that the incident was being investigated and assessed by officials from his office as well as the mining department.
With a report to be made available in the coming days, Minister Kama added that if necessary, the mine would be closed – however, this would depend on reports compiled by specialists currently assessing the situation on ground.
