Cannon Express Concern Over Attacks on St John Ambulance Team

By Annette Kora – EMTV News, Port Moresby

Two separate incidents of assault and armed robbery took place in the early hours of this morning resulting in the assaulting of two members of the St John Ambulance team who were responding to an emergency at 9 Mile, outside of Port Moresby.

Reports indicate that whilst on their way to the incident, they were attacked and viciously assaulted by armed men, and property belonging to the officers and St John equipment were stolen.

In a separate unrelated incident; yet again, a group of armed men attempted to hold up a St John Ambulance vehicle in the ATS area.

This is the third reported incident of attacks and assaults of St John Ambulance staff members whilst attending to emergencies in the nation’s capital.

Expressing disappointment at this morning’s occurrence, concerned CEO, Matthew Cannon, says St John’s focus now is providing support for the victims and their families, and ensuring the safety of the St John team whilst on duty.
“For centuries St John men and women have stood on the front line of danger, and its never acceptable for ambulance officers or health workers to be attacked.”

Calls have been made to the police hierarchy and assurance has been given for investigations to commence into both incidents.

Despite this being the third report documented so far this year, further assurance was given by Cannon that St John Ambulance will continue to respond and support the community in times of emergency and need.

Cannon yet again expressed an urgent call to the public to respect St John medical officers who are called to respond to emergencies and try to help out where possible under any instance or circumstances.

The matter is now being investigated by police and St John will be seeking trauma counselling for those affected.
