The Meekamui Unity Government has proposed September 1st as their target date for the containment of weapons in the hands of its members.
Its President, Phillip Takaun made this known at its recent Veterans’ Unification summit in Panguna.
In line with discussions at this Summit, weapons from throughout North, Central & South Bougainville will be brought to Panguna, where they will be verified and contained.
This decision by the Meekamui comes days after a meeting of the Joint Weapons Disposal Secretariat – where they, along with other veterans from the Bougainville conflict, reaffirmed their commitment to laying down arms to promote peace in the Autonomous Region.
