Small Craft Act in East New Britain Province Launched

By Edwin Fidelis – EMTV News, Kokopo

The East New Britain Provincial Government and the PNG Maritime safety Authority today launched the Small Craft Act in East New Britain Province. The Province is among 14 other maritime provinces in Papua New Guinea that has launched its small craft act.

The act will ensure that all boat owners who ferry passengers will register their boats, licensed and monitored.

East New Britain Provincial Governor, Nakikus Konga, warned boat owner in the Province that his Provincial Government will make sure all the owners comply with the maritime act.

The small craft act comes amidst ongoing instances of boats that continuously went missing or disappeared at sea in the Province.

This year alone, at least 2 boats have been declared by the East New Britain Provincial Disaster Office as ‘lost at sea’. One of them is yet to be located.
