The Head Teacher of St. Martins Catholic Primary School in Lae, Sakale Popen, yesterday revealed that there are 129 students identified as vulnerable from over 700 students attending the school. Popen has conducted the research two weeks ago to find out areas that may affect the students’ learning in class. He noticed that 17 students are not living with their biological parents. The report was shared in a head teacher’s meeting so that it can be conducted in other elementary and primary schools in Lae district.
Two weeks ago the Head Teacher told EMTV News that there were 118 vulnerable children from 700 students attending elementary to grade eight here at St. Martins Primary School in Lae. After completing the survey on Monday this week, Mr. Popen said there are now 129 vulnerable students attending the school.
Popen said the results from the data collected showed that parents are not responsible for their children and have passed the responsibility on to someone else. The research was based on whether the students are living with their biological parents, and how they are supported by those they live with. The Head Teacher said the students have needs. Who caters for their needs and safety has been an issue of concern over the years. Students have rights that have to be protected.
The survey was a new initiative which the Head Teacher plans to bring to the attention of the Education Division, Government Departments and Organisations to provide services for the children and parents.
The Head teacher plans to have it rolled out to all schools in Lae District.
He has submitted the report today to Lae’s District Education Manager, Kaumu Laga, who will then submit to the Education Division and the Provincial Education Board for consideration.
