Two contracts worth K41 million for upgrade work for Mendi and Tokua airports were signed by the National Airports Corporation and contractors on Friday. This infrastructure improvement falls under the Civil Aviation Development Investment Program (CADIP) which aims to redevelop 22 national airports to ensure safety and security compliance.
Tokua will see a fencing project, while Mendi will see a facelift in all its airport facilities.
NAC will be closely monitoring the two projects.
For Tokua, the fencing project is awarded to a local company, G-Man Construction at the cost of K13.3 million, while Mendi project was awarded to Chinese company, Sinohydro Corporation, at the cost of K27.7 million
The Asian Development and GoPNG has been the source of funding for the CADIP program since 2009.
Mendi MP, Michael Nali, says the project is a turn-around for the people of Southern Highlands. He says it is timely and work must progress.
“The upgrade of Mendi Airport will be an eye opener for the people of Southern Highlands who have gone through many issues in the past 12 months,” stated the Mendi MP.
The CADIP program will end in 2019.
