ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier Nearing for CPL PNG Lewas

By Dinnierose Raiko – EMTV News, Port Moresby

With the ICC T20 World Cup qualifiers in Netherlands approaching, CPL PNG Lewa Batswoman Brenda Tau is one cricketer whose chances for making the national team’s look promising.

The 20-year-old today, spoke to EMTV Sports about their East Asia Pacific Qualifiers last year, where they fought for the World qualifier spot. It is almost 11 months since the Lewas triumphed at the East Asia Pacific Qualifier in Samoa. Finishing the tournament at the top was not easy for them, having to overcome the challenge presented by host country, Samoa. Samoa gave them a good run in the beginning of the tournament, but the 6-wicket beating they gave Samoa in the final match was a sweet victory for them.

“We really worked hard for it, though at first we did fall with some games, especially with Samoa, but we picked up” said Brenda. “We told ourselves that we will keep going, we will do this and we will go to the tournament in the Netherlands,” the Batswoman World Qualifier-hopeful Brenda Tau reflected with much satisfaction in how hard they had fought to qualify.

The 20 year old, who has been in the Lewas Squad for 5 years now, was a recipient of the prestigious Baggy Green from Australian Cricket last November following her debuting performance at the Australian Cricket Country Championship.

“My team mates were congratulating me for the Baggy Green and I was really happy, and to be honest, it was a blessing to me so I’m keeping it” she recalled.

Brenda stands to play a crucial role in the Lewas Team, if selected. Training has been on-going for the Lewas since returning from the EAP Qualifiers and the ACCC.

“My usual roles is as a batswoman, sometimes in the opening or the top six and also a wicket keeper, but I spend most of my time with the bat for the Lewas”.

The final squad will be announced today (May 24)
