PNG and Australia hold High level Security Talks

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EMTV News, Port Moresby

The long-established security partnership between PNG and Australia took place today in Port Moresby, for the fourth annual Australia-PNG Bilateral Security Dialogue.

The Dialogue underlined our keen interest in maintaining regional stability and security amid an increasingly complex and changing strategic environment.

Discussions focused on how PNG and Australia can build on the strategic partnership through continued cooperation on regional security issues.

Regional health security, border security, biosecurity and fisheries were identified as essential to the shared strategic interests of the two neighbours.

Officials agreed that our cooperation and support on security for PNG’s APEC host year fits into our much broader strategic cooperation on security matters.

Our work together this year on maritime security, counter-terrorism and cyber-security will further strengthen the institutional links between our defence and police forces and their interoperability capabilities.

PNG offered to host the next Bilateral Security Dialogue and Economic Cooperation Dialogue in 2019 in Port Moresby.
