DWU Students Encouraged to ‘lead a life with values’

Students of Divine Word University have been reminded to appreciate their enrolment and education in a Christian university that is “deeply rooted in the scriptures”.

This message was from Fr Joseph Maciolek SVD, the Provincial (or head) of the Society of Divine Word Missionaries in Papua New Guinea at the launch of DWU’s academic year at the St John Paul II Community Hall in the Madang Campus last Friday.

“Divine Word University is rooted in the second person of the Holy Trinity, the Divine Word (or Jesus Christ),” said Fr Maciolek in his homily during the Mass to launch the academic year. “It (DWU) is based on the Gospel values,” Fr Maciolek added.

He called on the students to acknowledge their place in DWU and PNG as aspiring young professionals and make the most of their time in the university that stands on Christian principles.

Fr Maciolek likened the gathering of students from different cultural and language backgrounds to the Day of Pentecost when the early Christians from different parts of the known world at the time came together and spoke in different tongues but for a common purpose – to receive and bear witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ.

He said what happened on the Day of Pentecost in 33 AD reminds modern people of the “crossing of boundaries” for the purpose of receiving and bearing witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Fr Maciolek said to the students “we are connected with all the diversities and connected with Christian
values.”

“Carry the best of yourself forward – that is the transforming power,” said Fr Maciolek.

“We are one people, one nation, one country,” he said.

Divine Word University is a National University, open to all, serving the society through its quality of research, teaching, learning and community services.
