Australian Army gives PNGDF Communications Equipment

The Communication arm of the PNG Defence Force is predicting improvements, in the sending and receiving of military intelligence.

Under the Defence Cooperation Program, the Australian Defence Force today gave over 50 Very High Frequency Handheld radios and Very High Frequency Repeater Antennas radios and antennas to the PNGDF in preparations for APEC security.

The gift comes at a time when the PNG military is facing serious challenges in its Communications division.

They are an advanced version of what PNGDF is now using in its military bases, outside Port Moresby.

During the handover of the equipment, Head of the Australian Defence Force, said the gift is another step towards increasing the APEC Training, and is a capacity development for PNGDF.

Chief of Force Preparations, Col. Siale Diro, said the advanced equipment will assist PNGDF conduct and control all military operations.

“This relationship will grow stronger,” said Col. Diro.

This includes all PNGDF units, be it the land, sea or air elements.

The antennas take up to 5 minutes to set up and the signals can travel as far as Wutung, at the Northern PNG Indonesian Border, and Daru in the Southern region.

PNGDF is working closely with the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary in providing security for the 21 world leaders who will be attending the Summit in November.
