Slow Start to 2018 Sports

PNG’s national teams and representatives have some big events coming up this year.

They include the Commonwealth Games and the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier.

But it is still the beginning of the year, and most seasonal sports around the country are yet to start off their proper seasons.

As sportsmen and women around the country slowly come out of the festive period, there are some who are already hard at work either training or competing.

For the national teams and athletes attending the Commonwealth Games due in April, final trainings are expected to take place in the coming weeks.

The total number of codes and athletes attending is yet to be confirmed but for now, it is affirmative that PNG’s weightlifting team with the likes of the Toua sisters; Dika and Thelma, Steven Kari, Morea Baru, Toua Udia and Lorraine Harry will be defending their Gold and silver medals at the games.

For teams like the U19 PNG Garamuts, they are currently competing at the 2018 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand, the pinnacle of junior international cricket. while other PNG Sports federations are yet to announce their 2018 calendars.

Meanwhile, most national and provincial competitions are expected to kick start their 2018 season towards the end of next month.

For Port Moresby alone, the Bisini sports precinct and Sir John Guise has been quiet over the last three weeks.

Softball was the only code on the grounds at Bisini over the weekend.
