Moresby North-West Villagers Want Settlers Evicted

Villagers in the Moresby North-West electorate are working with police to evict a group of settlers who reside near the Badihagwa Technical Secondary School.

This comes after a number of petty crimes and armed hold-ups have occurred along the Koura Freeway.

Villagers claimed most of these incidents are caused by this group of settlers.

The latest, being a stealing incident which had resulted in a man suffering a broken leg.

Koura Freeway is the new road linking June Valley to Konedobu.

Because it is a shorter distance to downtown Port Moresby, more residents who live at Waigani, Morata and Tokarara use this route.

In recent times, a number of petty crimes along the freeway have been reported.

Yesterday, a fight broke out between employees of the China Harbour Engineering Company. It is reported an employee injured one of his legs during the conflict.

And this morning, his relatives tried to retaliate but police intervened and dispersed the crowd.

At noon today, police officers went into the area and burnt down houses belonging to illegal settlers.

Over 25 families have been affected so far.

Police have commenced initial investigations and will release an official statement soon.
