PNG Power Opens New Control Centre

PNG Power Ltd (PPL) commissioned a new Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Centre at its Kokopo office to monitor the Gazelle Power Supply Grid.

The SCADA Centre was officially commissioned last week and will boost the efforts of PPL personnel on the ground to locate faults and restore power supply within a required turnaround time.

Gazelle becomes the fourth (4th) centre in the country where the SCADA system has been put in place to monitor power faults at its major power grids. Port Moresby, Lae and Ramu already have established SCADA systems in place.

The Kokopo SCADA was installed with a computerised monitoring system which enables System Controllers to remotely monitor and alert system abnormalities.

This was done with the collaborative efforts from the System Operations team, the SCADA development team, Technical Assurance and the ICT Department.

A computer with a two split LCD display was setup at the centre, which is now giving real-time information on the transmission and distribution lines and substations.

The system will help PPL to proactive and also minimise on conducting line patrols to identify faults. The fault will be identified by the SCADA centre and relayed to the linesmen to rectify.

The Gazelle System has two substations in Kokopo and Rabaul and covers 100 kilometres of Transmission Lines and 500 kilometres of Distribution Lines from Warangoi to Kokopo, Kerevat and Rabaul.

The huge coverage area in East New Britain needed such a system to be installed so we could minimise the restoration time whenever there is a power outage.
