The PNG Kumuls are only three days away from their Rugby League World Cup 2017 opener against Wales here in the Nation’s Capital at the National Football Stadium.
Since their RLWC debut in 1985, Papua New Guinea went on to appear in 6 editions of the World Tournament.
Their strongest performance came 15 years later, in the RLWC 2000 when the PNG Kumuls with the likes of Former Melbourne Storm and Papua New Guinea’s very own, Marcus Bai fought their way to the Quarterfinals-where they lost to Wales 22-8.
Years of waiting for another go at the force that took away their chances of a first shot at the finals have now come down to days.
In three days’ time, the PNG Kumuls will host Wales, determined to come out on top.
And Wales will be arriving tomorrow with their own agenda and that is to cause an upset in their opener match.
Having totalled over 50 points in their previous meets with the Kumuls, they now look to continue their undefeated ways against the home side.
After their debut in 1975, Wales appeared in four World Cups and made their way up to where they are now currently ranked 9th, which is 6 ranks ahead of the Kumuls.
But this is a new breed of Kumuls who have proven quite remarkable in the lead up to this World Cup.
After missing two finals in the past two editions, the Kumuls will run out at the National Football Stadium grounds on Saturday aiming to win the opener in front their crowd with the backing of over 7 million people nationwide.
