NCD Police Control Clash at Gerehu

Port Moresby police are investigating the death of a young man who was killed last night at Gerehu Stage Two.

The deceased, identified as Pewi Lama, was returning home when he was attacked and killed.

Raymond Welema who said he was present when the incident started last night. He explained that it began with a minor argument between a Taxi Driver and a Store Keeper at the back road leading to Gerehu Stage Six.

Following the argument, a fight broke out between the Taxi Driver and Store Keeper.

But The fight later erupted into something bigger when relatives of the Taxi Driver stabbed another young man who was returning home after watching the NRL Grand Final.

This morning, another fight broke out when reports that the young man who was stabbed, had died at the Gerehu General Hospital.

Police responded at 7 in the morning and tried to calm the situation.

However, when police left, an even bigger fight started around 12pm on the hill behind the Yumi Yet Housing Estate.

One faction was based at Tete Settlement, while the other at Yumi Yet Estate.

Both groups carried bushknives and axes, and raced up the hill to engage in a war like battle.

But quick response by over 100 police personnel disturbed both groups and they were pushed back into the opposite directions.

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent, Ben Turi rushed to the scene and spoke with leaders of both groups.

Witnesses were identified and taken to Boroko Police Station where their statements were collected.

Meanwhile a proper incident report will be released by the Met Sup once all reports are compiled

The matter is being investigated by Criminal Investigators from the Homicide Unit.
