Remaining Boluminiski Road Sealing to be Completed by August 2018

The sealing of the remaining 30km on Boluminiski Highway in New Ireland, is expected to be completed in August 2018.

This is the section of the Highway between Pinaty village in Kavieng district and Po village in Namatanai.

Works Minister, Michael Nali and Works Secretary, David Wereh were in the province and inspected the current road work, conducted by Dekenai Construction.

This is the first ministerial visit by Minister Nali and Secretary Wereh after the formation of the new government.

The visit was to check the progress of the current road works, inspect the quality of the materials used and ensure the sealing is completed on time.

Boluminisky remains the oldest but well maintained highway in Papua New Guinea.

It was constructed by the German Colonial Administrator, Franz Boluminiski between 1901 and 1906.

The 260km road is an important link connecting people in the two New Ireland districts.

It is one of the 16 priority National Roads that the government has invested in sealing and maintaining.

Because limestone was used in the construction of the road, minister Nali explains that it will be less expensive to maintain compared to the other national highways.

Solomo Pela, the Works Provincial Manager said civil engineers and contractors are working section by section to complete the seal the 30km road.

Their other focus is on building proper bridges.
